hana kostis is a technology of transformation
she is a multi-disciplinary artist, currently creating on Ohlone land, who exists in perpetual paradox— kostis has learned to navigate this state of being through deep excavation and cultivation of a personal archive spanning generations, continents and lifetimes. through a process of adaptation and elimination she crafts the bedrock of a lifelong pursuit of becoming.
. . .
out of necessity my being has become my practice— an instrument through which i unpack myself to metamorphose trauma and live with intention. my creative investigation is born from a ceaseless determination for self-knowledge and desire to understand my identity as a cultural, biological and spiritual being.
the utilization of salvaged materials is a principle part of my creation process. it is a way to employ time and history as a raw material, and consciously connect and converse with my lived environments. through an expression of love and wonderment for the things i find innately resonant, i create a visual context for myself within the larger whole. it is a literal way to repurpose the excesses of capitalism while honoring the natural world and human ingenuity. this dialog becomes a mode to cycle emotion and collapse space and time as materials meet — making the “old” a carrier for the “new”.
someplace between the organic, historical, cultural, personal and devotional is where i choose to grapple with myself, allowing me to imagine my way out of social constructs while examining the historical etchings rooted in my physical body. for me, creation is a means to contemplate the line between what society has made me and my personal truth as an ever evolving vessel of time.
